You wouldn't think it would be TRICKY
to line blocks up when using sashing.
But I've found that they don't
AUTOMATICALLY line up!
Surprised?
I know I was as a beginning quilter.
I thought that if I just eyeballed it
and pinned these two together it would work.
It doesn't always.....
;/
Thankfully..... I remembered this little trick today!!!
Using a ruler and pencil
Line up the ruler with the seam you are matching below
and draw some little tiny knotches on the top of that sashing piece.
Now...
when you lay the next row down to pin...
you can match the seams to those little pencil marks.
And..... when using WHITE fabric
pin it BACK away from the white
so it doesn't show through when you get this quilted!
You should also press it away from the white.
Oooh! I'm so GLAD I remembered that little trick today!
It slowed me down JUST a little bit....
but I'm really happy with the results!
Happy quilting!
That's a new trick to me. Very helpful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteBy the way ... This quilt is awesome!
Such a simple thing...but I think we have all had trouble with this problem...great tip!
ReplyDeleteThanks Beth I'll remember that :-)
ReplyDeleteI can never eyeball it either. They look beautiful now!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tip! I'll be honest, I've never thought to do that. Of course, by now I know to never assume everything will line up. I'm just not precise enough, with my cutting or with my piecing. But this could help me out, so thanks for sharing!
ReplyDelete...I'm gonna have to remember this trick! Sashings are in my immediate future!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Great trick, I generally just add corner stones so I don't have to line things up by eye. I'm surely gonna try this. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent tip, Beth---thanks so much sharing it with us. Love love love this quilt, btw.
ReplyDeletethanks, that's very helpful! I can never get them to line up unless I do a LOT of pinning and they still aren't always right. Thanks sooo much.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tip. I just made a wallhanging with sashing and had to rip out the first line because they didn't match up like I assumed they would. I will definitely be using this tip.
ReplyDeleteEveryday I come by and everyday I am thrilled at your creations! I am working on one of the hardest quilts I have ever done....no pattern...but I count it all joy...it's for my little gb that is due to make an appearance in March! Thank you for all the inspiration I get from your blog!

A very useful tip and something that wouldn't have occurred to me, thank you. I've never used sashings before, but have plans to so I'll be able to do this from the start.
