Thursday Things

Erin is collecting blocks to make some quilts.
If you'd like to help...
please visit her blog and make a few!

We can ALL do a little something to
HELP out!!!!

I saw my quilt hanging in HOUSTON!!!
No.
I'm not there...
I happened to see it
on the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative's

It was fun to make...
and I hope the NEW owner will love it
as much as I do!!!

My black in white quilt is in Houston as well!!!
It's part of a black and white exhibit.

(This picture was taken at the Long Beach show.
I can't believe it's the ONLY picture I have of this quilt!)
:/

I'm sewing with friends today.
;)
Happy Thursday!

Quick Quilt!

This was a very quick quilt to make....
because I used VERY big blocks of color!!

I only had to make FIVE of these nine patches
using 9" squares of fabric.
It all began with some orange fabric I liked.
I pulled some more oranges
and placed them in the corners.
I wanted those squares to be UN-CUT.

I placed a dark POP! of color in the center....
FOUR light colors in between....

I sewed these big nine patches together..
and then...

....I did some cutting.
Since I used 9" squares...
I measured 4 1/4" from each seam.
TWO cuts.
Easy. ;)

I also needed to trim each of these squares once they were all cut.
It really helps things match up when you
SQUARE UP!!!

After moving blocks around....I put it ALL together!
The colors in here are so fun!!!
Polka dots always help too!!!
A simple 2 1/2" wide sashing....
and a 6" wide piano key border.....
VIOLA!!!

a very QUICK quilt
measuring 65"x76"

Inspiration

Color inspiration comes to us in MANY ways.
Sometimes it's in our kitchen!
I just love this little plate!!!
It's been sitting on my stove as a sort of spoon rest.
It cheers me everytime I look at it!

It's fun to put all that color into a QUILT!!!
This is the beginning of a VERY large Disappearing 9 patch.
My squares were cut into 9" pieces!!!

I've decided I really like LITTLE pieces of fabric the BEST...
But....
When you want to finish a quilt in a hurry...
You'd better cut 'em BIG!!!!

Endings and Beginnings

I'm coming to the end of this quilt.
Finally.
It's been waiting for me to quilt it and I've finally decided
where it's going!!!
I've decided to send it to Victoria's Basics Quilt gather.
I figured giving this one away would be a great way to BEGIN my year.
A few pins and some quilting swirls....
then I can pop it into one of those handy dandy
priority boxes...don't you love those things?
I've used one of them almost every week....
sending little things to my daughter who's away at school.

The fabric in those two black blocks is my favorite in this quilt.
They look kind of retro....
and I love the way they fit in with the ocean theme!
It was in my stash....
came from who knows where....
But to me...
It's wonderful!!
OOPS!
Looks like I'm at the end of this roll of batting too!!
Maybe a trip to the fabric store is in my future!
;)

And...
Here's my beginning.
This quilt has been on my mind for a long time now.
I've been collecting fabric over the past year and thinking....
about patterns....
about designs...
What would be the BEST pattern/design to use???
I NEVER came up with a great answer.
A lightbulb never went off.
And you know what??
I want to make a quilt!!
Soooo...
I'm just beginning a simple Disappearing 9 patch.
Oh Good.
I don't have to "stew about it" any more.
Now.... I just get to sew....

counting my blessings

As I sew today...
I'm counting my many blessings.
My mind is not full of
-fabric choices..
-pattern decisions...
-cutting mistakes...
I picked up a KIT!
My local quilt guild has these available every month.
Everything is ready to go!
I did not have to cut a thing.
I did not have to choose fabric.
Just sew those squares together and...
make a quilt!
All that's left now is to
pin and quilt it!
So today...
I'm counting blessings.
I'm not in a hospital needing one of these.
I'm not a lonely child needing one of these.
I'm not a struggling parent needing one of these.
...and there are so many other needs....
I get to MAKE one of these.
I'm thankful today.
