Four Squared

I've been making these little coasters.
I'm calling the quilt block "four squared".
This will be my FOURTH set!
Probably not my last either!!!
LOL!
The holidays are coming...
and I THINK they make great little gifts!

'
One of my friends in blogland wanted a short
"how to".
I will oblige.
;)

Begin with two 1 1/2" strips
Mine are about 21" long.....
cut from fat quarters.

After sewing the two strips together cut into 1 1/2" segments.
These four segments will make ONE coaster.

Cut a couple more 1 1/2" strips.
You don't need much!
You're adding 2 1/2" pieces to the little segments.

Add a 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" LIGHT piece on the side of TWO segments.

Add a 2 1/2"x 1 1/2" DARK piece
on the side of the other TWO segments.

Arrange them like this.

Sew the pieces together.
Your block should be 4 1/2"x 4 1/2"

Layer:
Backing right side up.
(I cut mine a bit bigger than the block)
Coaster right side down.
Batting 4 12/"x 4 1/2"

Sew around the coaster leaving a small opening.

TRIM.

After turning it right side out.....
Pin the opening closed.
Slip stitch it closed.

Add some quilting stitches.
I used embroidery floss.....3 strands.

Begin by entering an inch or so AWAY from your beginning.
This is how you HIDE the knot.

Pull through.

Give a little TUG...and it will be HIDDEN.
:)

Do the same thing when you END.
Just make a knot....

And exit AWAY from where you stopped sewing.

Fish around with your needle to pull that thread INSIDE.

Make THREE more...
Tie them up with a ribbon
and GIVE something PRETTY AWAY!

Finally Finished!

The wedding quilt for Dear Daughter #1 is finally complete.
It only took almost FOUR years!
I just checked....
here's the very first post......
November 2009.
Here I'd been thinking it had been only 2 plus years!
TIME FLIES!

It fits MY bed JUST right!!!

Lots and LOTS of petals were painstakingly
hand appliqued onto squares
following a pencil line as my guide.
Since the instructions for this quilt along
were never completed and I couldn't figure out
some of it....
circles of petals were appliqued onto a VERY large!
EXTRA large!

I quilted this on my machine.
(ms. Juki)
Tension problems made the job more difficult.
ugh!
After quilting around each petal
I echoed the petals in the border.

I love the way it looks...
just wish my quilting was PERFECT!
Do we all LONG to be perfect quilters???
I'd actually settle for
HALF decent quilting!!!
;/

I pieced together a backing large enough.
90"x90"!!
Another effort at USING what I already OWN!

After looking high and LOW for a suitable binding,
Asking myself....
What color should I use???

I ended up with MUSLIN!
LOL!
It really IS the perfect touch.

It's all curled up on the floor....
waiting to be put into a box.
A box that will TRAVEL!!!

Yippee!
Happy to be done.
BUT....at the same time
Kind of SAD.
Sad to see my GOOD friend leaving home.

Little finishes

A teeny tiny finish.
Hand quilted with gold embroidery floss.

Backed with a modern zig zag.

Does anyone out there know the name of this quilt block?
I copied the design from an old quilt block I saw.

Love making little things.
The finish comes so quickly!
NOT like the big monster queen sized quilt I've got going!!!

I DO see the end of that one though!!
HOoray!
JUST have the binding to do......
How long do you think it will take me to
CHOOSE the fabric???
That might take longer than putting it ON!!!
LOL!

One day

I began the day with cutting squares.
I love to GET GOING right away in the morning!

A NEW quilt!!!
Oooh.....I love beginnings!
This one is especially NICE
because it's a special REQUEST!
(a twin sized quilt for a little boys BIG bed!)

Lots and plaids, stripes and SHIRTS!
Good thing I have a stash of those!

Then I did some wrestling with this monster.
The quilting is all done around the applique.
I just have the white areas left.
I'm trying to mimic the pattern in the white border.
A very light pencil line is all I'm using
as I work around this BIG quilt!

I've made some more coasters.
They need some slip stitching on the side
and quilting stitches.
The PERFECT project to take along today
as we go to my daughter's therapy appointment!
;)

Aaaah!
Time to relax a bit.
Crotchet is addicting!
It's ALSO....
Perfect with a cup of coffee!

A day FULL of FUN!
Fabric.
Quilting.
and
Yarn.

Little blocks

These little coasters are for my daughter.
She needs a little housewarming gift!

I used 1 1/2" strips and squares to make them.
Don't think I've ever gone SMALLER than that!!
;)

Hope they're MODERN enough for her.
I LOVE them.
Think I'll make another SET!
I'm visiting a relative next week
and could use a little something to GIVE!

Don't you LOVE making little gifts
using fabric?
Adding the hand quilting makes these
EXTRA special!

Housekeeping

This little shade and sheer curtain is LONG overdue.

I'm happy to say
"I USED what I HAD!"
That's why there's a little bit
of white eyelet on the sides of the sheer curtain.

Did I mention
I'm trying to USE WHAT I HAVE all this year???
It's now October
and I've done a PRETTY good job.
Not PERFECT....
but I'm making a little dent in my STASH!
Woo hoo!!!

The bottom of the shade is the BEST part!!!

This is what it was like BEFORE!

I just trimmed that OFF
and hand stitched some fabric onto the bottom of the shade.
I would have used my machine
but....
Didn't want to take the shade OFF of the roller.
;)
yes.
I'm lazy.

When the shade is up
the sun shines in without ALL of the
YUCKY view my daughter has.
When the shade is DOWN
I admire my little bit of handiwork!!!

I'm also going handmade in the kitchen.

Applesauce from scratch!!
MMMM.....
SO easy and So good.

Add a little water to the cut up apples and simmer.
Eat as soon as it cools off enough!
;)
Mine is cooking NOW
and....
It'll be GONE before I post again!
