Monday Making

This week I used this hexagon quilt as my inspiration.
(I made it for daughter and son-in-law a few years ago for their wedding)

I made a few hexagon rows and am fashioning a table runner.
I did a little demo on my youtube channel.
I used a half hexagon approach WITHOUT a special ruler.

I drew a 60 degree line on my quilting ruler for my angle...
And....
It worked out just fine.
:)

 I also did some knitting.
It’s almost SLIPPER WEATHER!!
What are YOU making??

Deep Blue Sea

My quilt top is complete.
All I needed to do was to sit down and DO IT!  The thought of appliquéing the edges of all the hexagons onto the white border was bigger in my HEAd than the reality!
I was able to appliqué all around this afternoon !

Does anyone else like to appliqué on a table?
After sewing a basting stitch through the middle of the outside hexagons...attaching it to the border.....I needle turned the edges under.

Now I need to get some motivation from somewhere......and quilt this thing. It's HUGE!

Ooooh! I love all that color!
Hoping to quilt some hexagons in the white border.  Wish me luck!
Anyone have some extra motivation laying around they're not using?
I'm running short.
;)

The post about how I made this quilt is HERE .

Half Hexagons

Another quilt is coming together.
Woo HOo!!!

I think one of the hardest parts of making a quilt...
is cutting all the pieces!
AND....
for ME...
trying to get all the pieces the exact SAME size!
;)
I think I'll always struggle with THAT.

I cut strips 2 3/4" wide

and used my OLD FRIEND (60 degree line on my ruler)
I cut a diagonal line every 3"
(using the TOP of the hexagon as my 3")
to make each half hexagon.

It's ALL coming together.
In fact....

The OLD and NEW fabrics in my stash
are working remarkably WELL together!!!

That REALLY old turquoise floral print up there
looks perfect with that golden modern print.

Even some DATED gray/blue fabric
has found a good home in this quilt!!!

This quilt also contains a lot of fabric given to me
as gifts by a friend.
That makes it extra SPECIAL!

Half Hexagons (a new beginning)

I'm pulling fabric out today.
I'm getting ready to BEGIN something NEW!
Let's hear it for new beginnings!!!
It is SO fun to start a brand new project!
Kind of like a Christmas present to myself!
;)

Here's my practice hexagon
and a few half hexagons READY to go!

Let me say...
It was a bit tricky trying to figure out how to cut the shape
WITHOUT the aid of a template.
When I get something in my mind to DO...
I don't like waiting to buy a tool.
Plus....
I LIKE figuring it out!
Gets those old brain cells MOVING!
Hah!

I cut a strip 2 3/4" wide.

Then I began cutting through two layers of fabric
using my 60degree angle on my ruler
and a piece of tape as my guide.

This 3" side is important too!!!
Each cut is 3" away from the next on the shorter side.
(in the bottom of this photo)

Hopefully when the rows are sewn together...
ALL the hexagon sides will be 3"!!!!

That's the HOPE!
;)
it's o.k. if they're not all perfectly the same
since I'm sewing them in rows.

IF I had cut WHOLE hexagons....
I would have WAY TOO MANY "Y" seams..
for MY liking!!!
Can you imagine how many Y seams that would be????
Ugh!

Here are the two pieces I need for each hexagon.....
but they have to WAIT!

I need to sew the half hexagons in rows
and THEN put the rows together.

THAT'S when you'll see the hexagon!
You also might see my hair has been ALL torn out
from trying to line up matching rows of half hexagons
on my living room FLOOR!!!
The goal is a QUEEN sized quilt!

Here's hoping that MOST of the prints I choose
will be busy enough
to disguise that center seam I'll have in each block.
What if I want some solids in here too....
Will the seam show too much???
Hmmm....
Another bunch of decisions to ponder!!!!
