I like to make quilt blocks that don't require
a lot of matching or math.
This block suits me.
All it takes is ONE piece of paper (I used a phone book page)
one square (any size) of color.
Strips of color and strips of white varied in width.
I began by cutting my paper foundation to 8 1/2" square.
I set one little square of color in the corner....
making sure it hung off the edge a little bit.
That way.....when you're sewing..... it doesn't accidentally
move in away from the edge!
I added two white strips.
My white strips are NOT ALL THE SAME width.
Neither are the colored strips.
THAT's why this is called a FREE STYLE block. ;)
Press as you add strips.
(Notice the new ironing board cover.)..... ;)
If you're strip is TOO LONG....sew it on...
and then trim.
Don't trim RIGHT next to the edge of the paper.
We'll trim it up when it's ALL DONE!
Here it is!!!
Notice...
You can end with a white strip on the outside....
or....
You can end with a colored strip...
IT DOESN'T matter!!!!
It IS helpful to make sure your outside strips
are not too SKINNY!
You don't want to LOSE your strip
when piecing the blocks together!
Turn your block over and trim along the edge of your foundation.
You've completed ONE BLOCK!!!
Easy....huh?
Blocks can be arranged like this.
Or like this....

A Free Style quilt!!!!
A fun block and a fun quilt. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis is another of favorites. Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThank you für the wonderful Tutorial!
ReplyDeleteKind regards, Sigrid
That is a wonderful free style block.
ReplyDeleteI have to do this. Does the print on the yellow pages come off on the fabric?
ReplyDeleteRuth: The print has not come off on my fabric.
ReplyDeleteI like this idea a lot. One of my least favorite things to do is measure and always have to be so precise. This allows one a lot more freedom. It looks great! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI love the ones without measuring, no templates, no precise anything. I've been wanting to make on since you showed the blue one. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tut.
Hugs!
Nice . . . I think I'd do it on a muslin foundation, I hate tearing off paper! :) We also live where it's chilly all year long so I like the extra bit of weight it carrires.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic tutorial and great idea. thanks
Denise,
Nice tutorial! Thank you. I must try this block :D
ReplyDeleteI want to try this block, too. I like to use paper foundations and do not mind tearing off the paper.... Kinda like peeling off chipped nail polish.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this tut. I definetly need to do some of these. it may (fat chance) bring some order to the chaos of my scrap pile.
ReplyDeleteFun technique and a great quilt!
ReplyDeleteGreat little tutorial, Beth - and the quilt is fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteJust WOW!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this. It's a great method for when you want a quick, simple block that gives stunning results.

Thanks for the tutorial on this! Another wonderful quilt top Beth!
ReplyDeleteoh so lovely...again...... i know for sure that you don't sleep..... you're up all night patching.......
ReplyDeletecurious - is it necessary to use paper, or would it work alright just sewing strips together log cabin style??
This looks fun, I am a beginner and wonder if you would mind sharing why you sew on to the phone book page? I did a scrappy log cabin block for a wall hanging and it just had me add strips around the center square, so I am interested in the purpose of the phone book page.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Michelle
Now this a wonderful use for that phone book that's been sitting out on my front steps...!! Looks great - do you have any trouble with the ink transferring to the white or light colors?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great looking quilt. Love this. And right now I'm kicking myself too as I just tossed out about three old phone books recently. All I kept are the smaller ones. OH but, it is Spring and the new ones should be coming soon and since I haven't really used one in years, I can use that. I think we get two different ones too.
ReplyDeleteSo excited. This would also be awesome using Halloween or Christmas fabric scraps...Thankyou for the pattern and great use of the phone book...
