Monday Making

I am working on some paper piecing this week.
It’s been a LONG time since I tried this type of hand sewing.
I was in a hurry to pack the supplies as I was getting ready to visit my son and daughter in law.
So....
The fabrics were chosen in a big HURRY!
This will be practice piece.
I’ll turn it into a table mat when it’s done. :)

I used a template to draw the diamonds on freezer paper.
Then I pressed the papers onto some scraps.
Once the freezer paper shapes were pressed on...
And the scraps trimmed with a selvage added...
I was ready to GO!!

All I need in this hand work bag Is the needle, thread and small scissors!!

What is your favorite way to prepare
English paper piecing???

Do you use prepared paper shapes?
Plastic shapes??
I have TONS of freezer paper...
So I think I will continue to use this method.
A little more labor intensive..
But it’s FREE!!

What are YOU making this week???

  3. I buy the pre-cut paper shapes. I've had trouble with accuracy when I make my own pieces.
I don't see a linky for Monday Making.

  4. Handwork is always nice to take along on a visit. I've get a loooong term hexie project that I started with precut shapes. Enjoy your visit and the hand stitching.

  5. https://melsquiltingblog.blogspot.com/2020/11/design-wall-monday.html tells what I'm working on this week. I need to pull my paper piecing out and figure out what style I like best. I took 3 classes at Houston Quilt Festival last year. But, I am not sure I like that type of hand work. LOL

  6. Hi,
Lovely hexies...I've never paper pieced before...I might
have to give this a try. Have a great day!

  7. I'm not big on the hand piecing, but I do admire anyone who can handle it.

  9. I've made large hexies with various shapes inside like those stars. I used paper shapes generated at Incompetech:
    https://incompetech.com/graphpaper/
and then I printed out graph paper on to scrap paper. After that I just stacked up a pile of papers and cut them out following the graph paper templates. Then I had a bunch of scrap paper foundations. I've never tried the freezer paper method.

  10. I have never done English paper piecing but it intrigues me. I like the idea of using freezer paper. I like handwork of various types (crochet, loom knitting, cutting quilt pieces, embroidery, etc.) because a lot of my creative time is in the evening while watching TV. I'm considering starting a hand applique project in the new year...though that will be new to me.

  11. I learned to use those stiff cards stuck in magazines as free templates. And once cut and sewn into place, you can remove them and reuse them. I have a lingering project that I work on every couple of years. Using 1800's repros and hexagons. It has no direction, I just make flowers and have some set together for a center of the quilt.

  12. I made the paper backings for my Tumbling Blocks from card stock for the printer. I need to get back to that one!

  13. Hi Beth, I only make hexie shaped paper piecing - I can't seem to get the hang of the other shapes. I buy my shapes because they are stiffer and can easily be reused. I usually get them on sale so it's not too bad. I did try to make my own templates but I am accuracy challenged, even there it seems, so the investment is worth it. Have fun and take care.
