sad sighting

This poor old quilt!!!

Protecting a car engine from the elements.
Not QUITE what the quilter had in mind
when she made it and gave it.

It was early morning when I spotted this quilt.
The house looked sleepy...
so I didn't knock on the door
to ask if I can
RESCUE that quilt!!!

I bet YOU know of quilts
that ended up doing something
FAR different
than the maker intended!!!!

  1. Oh NO! Did you ever find out why it was warming the front of the truck?

    Happy Sewing

  5. I rescued a baby quilt once that was going to be cut up and used as shop rags. I about fell over when I saw it sitting on our friend's workbench!

  8. I once had a friend that was using a quilt her G'ma had made as a dog bed! I would have been honored to have that quilt! She felt guilty enough, or shamed, I'm not sure which, to pick it up and care for it, or at least put it away when I visited, I don't know which. A true friend would have offered it to me!

  11. You should have taken a nice tarp and traded it for the quilt. I think the tarp would work better unless they were trying to keep the engine warm. LOL

  13. Maybe you could go back with a drop cloth or 2 for them in exchange for the quilt? A friend of my husband's covered his lawn mower (which was outside) with a quilt his Grandmother had made! When I found out I explained to him the time, work and love his Grandmother put into the quilt and asked him to get it off right away! He did and has come to appreciate quilts, their beauty, the quilters behind them, their history, etc.

  14. oh my word!!! i have seen so many at goodwill and try to save them when i see them even if they are not my favorite. i always feel bad for the person that made it and then gave it to someone that did not care and appreciate it

  15. Before we go too crazy, or talk about stealing it, it could've been the quilter herself who put it out there. I've made more than a couple of quilts that I disliked enough to donate as a car warmer.

  16. I looked at this picture and saw nothing wrong with it. Yes, I put a lot of effort into my quilts. When I give one it is with love. I do give gentle instructions on the care and cleaning. I have even offered to wash it if the person who receives it feels unsure about putting it in their washing machine. I make quilts to be used, though ... and used up. Fabric does not last forever.

This morning I darned a hole closed in one of my favorite bed quilts before putting it in the washer. One of my kitties pulled the hole open with her claw. My kitties love my quilts. She was just being a cat. People are people. They use quilts in a variety of ways.

How do we know that this quilt is not loved? How do we know that the person who put it on the hood of the car did not smile and think of the person who gave it? How do we know that this person did not bring it in and wash it and run his or her fingers over the fabric and think fondly of the person who made it?

Cats, people, quilts ... nothing is perfect in this world and some of my favorite treasures are shabby and worn ... used and loved. JMHO ... have a happy quilty day ... :) Pat

  17. I usually make quilts to be used and loved and used some more. After they have been loved "enough" they go to my dogs who love them even more. It doesn't bother me to see old worn quilts because I feel they have been used and loved!

  18. That's a pretty quilt! I know people can do what they like with their quilts, but I figure if I like it and they just need a dropcloth, I would offer to trade with them. So much beauty in all the small parts of a quilt and they can just use a plain canvas for their needs.

Did you ever drive back that way again and see what happened, or is it just too sad? :)
